Around 1839, a chapel was built, where Santa Cruz's Church is now, creating the primitive local population. The territory, initially, belonged to Araraquara and it was cut by expansion trails for Mines located far interior of the State. Brotas became district of Araraquara in 1.858 and city in 1.859.

It’s anniversary is commemorated on May 3rd with an old Catholic commemoration, Santa Cruz . The origin of the name BROTAS has different hypotheses, but the most probable comes from the origins of the founder. Being Francisca Ribeiro dos Reis a Catholic devoted of Nossa Senhora das Brotas, in Portugal, it would have rendered homage to the saint, deciding to name the town after Her.

There is a image o Her from the XIX century in Santa Cruz's chapel. Brotas had its best development during the twentieth and thirtieth decades, due to the coffee expansion. Nowadays, the district still possesses a predominantly agricultural economy.

Considering the agricultural tradition and the natural resources of the district such as: waterfalls, preserved forests, mountains and rivers, the tourist economy, with base in the ecotourism, adventure tourism and rural tourism has become an important activity for the local economy.
